About Me

Hey!

I'm Mary and I'm a 20-something.

I love to volunteer, to write, to travel, and to have fun.

I graduated from the University of Southern California in 2011, with a double major in Gender Studies and Creative Writing, and a minor in Human Rights. FIGHT ON!!

I'm currently working towards medical school.

I'm an atheist, an optimist, a feminist, and a bunch of other things.

I can be entirely too serious about political issues.

I laugh easily... almost too easily.

I'm a klutz, and therefore, get injured pretty easily.

I'm a doula, an HIV educator, and, according to my friends/family, an eternal student.

I'm a jack of all trades. I have been: a tutor, a bartender, a driver, a receptionist, a sacristain, a teacher, a researcher/updater, a retail worker, a telemarketer... and probably more things that I can't remember.

I've been to 12 countries: USA (where I live!), Ireland, Wales, England, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Germany, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Nicaragua.

I've been to 30-ish states, and lived in 2: New Jersey & California.

I feel like these facts still can't quantify what I am, so I'm going to stop with the navel-gazing.

Loved your essay page. Loved what you said at the end: There's a reason you are applying. My wife and I, 60 & 57, are applying. We're heavy on education, skills and work experience, but very weak on volunteer work. I haven't done a resume in 15 yrs; I get my work through union referrals. I haven't written anything in which spelling or grammar counted in over 20 yrs; even in college, my writing was considered quirky. The process has been a struggle for me, start to finish.

I stumbled upon your blog by chance. I will definitely be following it.

Hi Mary,
Just to thank you for posting your essays and more importantly for what you said at the beginning of the first one " If there is something that you really want to keep in there because it shows your true colors or something important to you, keep it in there!" I was about to set aside my visit to Cuba because of the bad relations between US-Cuba. After I read those words I realized how I'm I going to set aside a life changing experience just because there is a political issue between both countries. Like you said 'I realized that although I went to help others, I ended up helping myself more' and it is exactly what happened to me. Thank you very much and good luck while serving in Cambodia. You are influencing many lives without even knowing it.
